Iron Thunder Site News

.

I've changed the secure URL to just:

https://battlebazaar.net

The .com will be on an alternate port for now.

I'm going to move these sorts of things to the blog (http://blog.battlebazaar.net), and keep them out of here.

Another reason I want to limit PVP and also improve transportation:

http://crispygamer.com/comics/ding/

One of the reasons that I want limited PVP instead of full PVP is explained here:

http://www.clichequest.com/index.php?pos=303

Note

I moved the secure site for battlebazaar.net to:

https://battlebazaar.net:4343

That means to use the secure site for e-mail, you have to use:

https://battlebazaar.net:4343/MEWebMail

To use the secure site for the wiki:

https://battlebazaar.net:4343/

The blog doesn't currently run secure sessions.

Once battlebazaar.com comes up, you will need to log in with a GM_ prefix on that site only.

Google says http://blog.battlebazaar.net is working -- I don't know why folks are reporting problems with it, but I don't see any reason it shouldn't be working. You cannot use a secure connection (https) to the blog, it has to be a standard, non-secure http.

I hope to have the BattleBazaar.com (note: .com) Secure Token Server up tomorrow. The Secure Token Server works with SQL Server and AD to authenticate users, without requiring any of their personal details on our server. We will identify users primarily by their paypal information. The subscriptions system is offline, but will be set up soon to run against the paypal sandbox.

I'm going to post some more talk about the moneyless economy in the wiki, why money will break down, and why its pointless to have something that doesn't work. What it boils down to is that I'm attempting to avoid a pitfall that every game falls into because of the insistance of introducing money.

I will be posting a JavaScript client for the Tradewars game. This will require any browser that can run JavaScript. This will make it easier to play (I am leveraging a client I wrote at the dawn of time via chrome (http://remobjects.com)). It will specifically support and be tested with IE 7, FireFox, and Opera. It is so I can shut off external access to TWGS, because it is not necessarily the most secure application on the planet. I should be able to also shut off the requirement to provide game passwords.

I am intending to bring up the IronThunder pre-alpha server during the last week in January. This will be up for people with an account in active directory only, and will be widened to more people once its stable. I am using .NET stored procedures (server side .NET objects) and proxies service side for the client code.

My current intent, but probably not yet in terms of implementation, is to run the actual zone servers and other components on OpenBSD virtual machines on the Windows host, and to run the database on a separate physical windows box, using a database that supports .NET stored procedures. There are a lot of databases, not just SQL Server, that are options in that scenario, and the advantage that .NET gives me over PL/SQL or T/SQL is improved portability to those systems. Additionally, it gives me access to facilities that are limited (or non-existant) in PL/SQL and T/SQL, and a much more natural syntax.

I am going to start blogging about some of the stuff as I work on it at http://blog.battlebazaar.net.

I've talked about some of the classic space games before, like Elite and Tradewars

Here's a current version of Tradewars:

http://tradewarsrising.com/

Or, you can play online at battlebazaar.net:

http://battlebazaar.net/tradewars/play.htm

(note: dedicated clients, like SWATH, are better)

Here's a similar game (free to play) that came up

http://www.starportgame.com/

Elite (the classic) is:

I adjusted the local DNS server so that battlebazaar.net (no www) will work.

Switched my name on the Wiki to DaveB; Eiji should be able to log in successfully again. I suggest using https://battlebazaar.net to log in (but do not currently enforce that) as otherwise people could see your password.

Installed the new service roll up for Windows 2003. Also set up SSH so I can get in that way in addition to remote desktop (this is primarily so I can use port forwarding).

Everything ought to be working again, let me know if anything isn't. Still working on updating the machines here.

In addition to our new security certificates, I also updated our DNS records and information recently. Thought I had done this already, but found out it was out of date when I went to register my TLS/SSL certificates! Go Daddy had an excellent turn around time, and was one sixth the price of anyone else that I found.

In other news, I'll be bringing the login servers on battlebazaar.com up later on this week with the PayPal sandbox.

You can connect to the site securely now using https://battlebazaar.net. You should get a lock icon.

If you have a mail account, you can get to it securely using https://battlebazaar.net/MEWebMail -- if you can't log in on that link that means I need to get you set up. If you have an IMAP, POP3 or HTTPMail client (such as Outlook, Envision or Thunderbird), those protocols are also available for e-mail.

The new certificates for battlebazaar.net and battlebazaar.com are signed by go-daddy, and should be automatically recognized by your browser without having to do any additional work.

I have started a server migration plan that ought to take effect in a couple days. It looks like viewing on all pages is working again, but it looks like the authentication isn't working at the moment. Thats OK, because this server will be coming down soon.

I have updated mod_mono and mono to the latest versions. This should greatly improve compatibility. I'm still updating config.

I posted a bunch of fixes to FlexWiki running on Linux. These include fixing the page histories and directory structure. Biggest change you'll see at the moment is that more features probably work than before.
